Immerse yourself in the timeless art of marbling, with a modern twist. Join us for a hands-on, two-day exploration of surface design guided by expert instruction and creative experimentation. Participants will learn foundational marbling methods of both Suminagashi and Western marbling with acrylics. Advanced techniques for pattern layering and over-marbling will also be explored.
Introduction to Marbling 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Learn the fundamentals of both suminagashi and acrylic marbling. Through demonstrations and guided practice, students will understand how paints interact on the water and how to control movement, layering, and composition. Highlights: Understanding paint, dispersant, and bath chemistry; exploring basic pattern making; creating moiré and stone effects; over-marbling techniques.

About the Instuctor
Deborah V. Thompson is the 11th graduate of the Fine Binding Diploma program at the American Academy of Bookbinding, where she studied with Don Glaister, Peter Geraty, and Monique Lallier. Her fine bindings are held in private collections, including two featuring covers created entirely with contemporary marbling techniques. She lives on the North Shore of Massachusetts and splits her time between designing and installing butterfly gardens in the summer and working in her home studio and teaching in the winter.
